Conférence de Robert Phiddian « How to Draw Xi Jinping? Recent Controversies and Ethical Conflicts in Australian Political Cartoons of Neighbouring Asian Countries »

Dans le cadre du cycle de conférences l’art en procès/COLIBEX, Ersy Contogouris a invité Robert Phiddian (Flinders University, Australie) afin de présenter la conférence How to draw Xi Jinping? Recent Controversies and Ethical Conflicts in Australian Political Cartoons of Neighbouring Asian Countries.

Résumé de la conférence

This talk considers some occasions when major political “gods” of Asia and Indo-Pacific, such as Indonesia’s then President Suharto and Malaysia’s then President Mahathir, were dragged into a rough satirical mode in public news and press in Australia, and the controversial effects of this. Questions discussed include whether these ridiculed individuals received—or deserved—any cross-cultural sensitivity; whether they were properly attacked according to the rules of a free press whereby the powerful can and should be mocked without reserve; and whether race and the history of colonialism mean that the Australian cartoonists concerned should have relented or apologised. This analysis relies on an understanding of the central function of stereotyping in humour theory and practice. Is asks: can comic stereotyping continue to be apt in the present day or political correctness and the debate around cancel culture?
